Harivihar is a royal manor-house built around 1850 by the Kadathanad royal family, who had ruled the northern parts of Kerala. They had built the house to facilitate their children’s’ education, which was not easily accessible in those days. The house was built according to Vasthu principles in traditional padinijitta (west-facing) style, as was prevalent then. On the south-west side was the family temple with Durga as the presiding deity, and a large traditional pond on the north-west side with perennial water supply, was used for swimming and bathing. The house had a main block, southern wing (thekkini) and northern wing (vadakkini) and there was a central courtyard separating the two wings and the main block.
Today, Harivihar is a heritage homestead and one of the best ayurvedic resorts in Kerala concentrating on Ayurveda therapies and Yoga –two great contributions of India to mankind. Situated in Calicut, part of the historic Malabar province, the gateway through which Europe, led by Vasco Da Gamma, entered the fabled Indies – Harivihar offers its guests the unparalleled experience of living in a heritage royal manor surrounded by a verdant and serene landscape.
At Harivihar, you can enjoy the priceless benefits of Ayurveda – the science of pristine living as prescribed by Mother Nature and perfected by ancient gurus. The fact that as a homestead it has received the prestigious Green Leaf accreditation – the highest honor from the Government of Kerala for authentic Ayurveda – makes Harivihar unique. Add to this courses in Yoga, delicious vegetarian cuisine, occasional performances of traditional Kerala art forms, delightful drives to the splendid beaches and hills in and around Calicut and it becomes clear why Harivihar is a place like no other.

The iconic royal mansion of Saratha Vilas is pride monument in Chettinad. The mansion is a beautiful, peaceful and comfortable guest house created within a former Chettiar mansion with great care and style by the architect hosts. The rooms are spacious, beautiful and have every comfort. Mine opened on to the courtyard which was a peaceful sitting or gathering area. The small village of Kothamangalam was such a treat to walk around, enjoying the day’s activities and seeing the amazing architecture of the Chettiar's mansions.
The Saratha Vilas is owned by the French couples - Bernard and Michele who have created a lovely slice of paradise in the property which offers the guests with genuine and generous hospitality.
The Saratha Vilas, built by a wealthy Chettiar merchant in the early 1900s, is a prime example of the luxurious mansion unique to the Chettinad region. The giant property includes buildings, courtyards and gardens, has been painstakingly restored, and converted into an eight bedroom heritage hotel by two French architects passionate about the preservation of Chettinad and its history.
The food and dining was delicious - enjoyed in the outdoor courtyard. So fresh with delicious dishes prepared with fresh ingredients. All of the staff was amazing - not just the great service, but the loveliness of each person. There is much to see and do in the local area, visiting the markets, temples, antique stores, other mansions, and just enjoying the villages.
The mansion is spellbinding with intricate designs and decorations. Its rooms are unique, with very good taste of interior designing that complement the comfort as well.
